History compulsory at Junior Cycle level for new school year

All pupils starting post-primary school in September will have to study history for three years, Education Minister Joe McHugh has confirmed.

History will join Irish, English and maths as a compulsory subject at Junior Cycle, but it will have slightly less tuition time than the other three.

The Department of Education has issued a directive to schools to take effect from the 2020/21 year, arising from Mr McHugh's decision to give history 'special core status'. Read article
